The Ecovillage proposal arises from Pacific Union College’s need to build its endowment to ensure the long-term financial health and viability of the institution.
Over the past 100+ years since Pacific Union College was established in Angwin, the college has from time to time sold portions of its vast land holdings for residential development. Indeed, the community is populated today in large part by residents living in the hundreds of homes that have been built on former PUC lands.
Over time, awareness of global environmental concerns has risen significantly, and in response to these concerns and in concert with the college’s dedication to the principles of healthy, environmentally sustainable living, Pacific Union College has selected Triad Communities to build the greenest project ever proposed for Napa County, and perhaps one of the most sustainable planned communities in the United States.
Comprised of 275 housing units and a 105-unit retirement/assisted living center on 30.1 acres of new development, less than 2% of PUC’s 1,900 acres, with another 36.1 acres planned for upgraded reuse of already developed land, the Ecovillage will provide a state-of-the-art community with an unparalleled commitment to sustainability, social equity and environmental preservation. Conditioned on project approval, Pacific Union College will permanently preserve 1,444.6 acres of ag and forest land and an additional 52.6 acres of ag and forest land within PD zoned areas (see map), thereby virtually eliminating the possibility of future housing development on its lands, with the exception of on-campus dormitories or faculty housing.
